BJ started in entertainment and professional journalism as a “posse member” on BET’s weekly teen talk show, Teen Summit in 1995 with then-host Ananda Lewis, scoring major interviews with celebrities and personalities, including Hillary Clinton, Method Man, and LL Cool J.
In 1998, BJ enrolled in Boston College in Chestnut Hill, MA and by 2002, earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in communications, having secured coveted internships with Maury Povich, CNN, and Queen Latifah all by age twenty. By his senior year in college, BJ was hired as the personal assistant to Kimora Lee Simmons, and by twenty two years old, BJ was working with actress Brittany Murphy of 8 Mile and Just Married. In 2003, BJ became a trusted fixture at NC Connect, Naomi Campbell’s PR & Marketing firm, where he served as a public relations Account Executive and Celebrity Wrangler for the firms heavyweight accounts, including Dolce & Gabbana and Alicia Keys. In 2004, BJ returned to working with Russell & Kimora Lee Simmons at the couple’s Phat Fashions empire, serving as Senior Director of Marketing & Public Relations, where he built and developed the brand’s in-house PR division.
Through hard work and dedication, BJ has earned a reputation in the entertainment and fashion industries as a trusted executive and by 2009, when he launched his own communications firm The Coleman Entertainment Group, had worked with such stars as Kim Kardashian, Vivica A. Fox, and Rihanna. As a veteran pop-culture commentator, BJ has been featured as an expert on The Tyra Banks Show, E! The True Hollywood Story, VH1’sThe Fabulous Life Of… series, multiple BET specials, & MTV’s Made, and from 2007-2009, BJ was a major player on Style Network’s hit reality series, Kimora: Life In The Fab Lane.
Aside from having previous columns in both New York’s Metro Newspaper and the weekly celebrity focused Hip Hop Weekly. BJ has also been profiled and featured in Harper’s Bazaar, Gotham, Hamptons, Vibe and Ebony magazines, and is a three-time Learning Annex instructor on Success in Public Relations, appearing as the magazine’s cover subject with Rihanna in 2010. In recent years, BJ was selected as a judge for Donald Trump’s Miss USA, Miss Universe, and Miss Teen USA pageants, and was the keynote speaker at Manhattan’s Murray Bergtraum High School graduations in both 2011 and 2012.
With his fresh perspective and unique writing skills, BJ continues building his own brand. In 2011, he launched his own food and restaurant blog Burgers & Bourbon with BJ Coleman –http://www.burgersandbourbon.com. With more than 5,000 unique visitors a month, BJ provides readers with insightful restaurant reviews, personal recipes and celebrity news.
In 2014, BJ served as an adjunct professor of Public Speaking and Fashion Journalism at the Wood Tobé Business & Fashion College in Manhattan.
BJ currently resides in both New York and Los Angeles.
